An 18-year-old California driver, who police say may have been driving drunk, hit a van on Saturday near Las Vegas, killing five members of a California family and hospitalizing two.?

Jean Soriano, 18, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Soriano has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in a southern Nevada crash that killed five members of a California family and injured the suspect and three other people.

Those killed were among seven family members in the van when it was hit early on Saturday, authorities said. The other two - a 15-year-old boy and the 40-year-old female driver - were hospitalized in?Las Vegas, said?Nevada Highway Patrol?spokesman Sergeant?Kevin Honea?said.

The 18-year-old?California?driver who struck the van was treated and released at?University Medical Center in Las Vegas, the spokesman said. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The crash happened on Interstate 15 about 80 miles northeast of?Las Vegas. The 18-year-old's?Dodge Durango?struck the van from behind and both vehicles spun off the road and rolled.

Five of the occupants of the van were ejected. A 23-year-old passenger in the Durango was treated at the hospital and released.

Those killed were three men ages 49, 45 and 41, a teenage girl and an adult woman.

It has been several weeks since it became clear that the most serious (and possibly only) suitor for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who apparently remain willing to pay Revis what he wants on a long-term deal even as the cornerback market has disintegrated.

But a trade bogged down with the Jets wanting a package headlined by the 13th overall pick in the 2013 draft and the Bucs hoping instead to send a 2014 first-rounder that, if the team from Tampa has its way, will be much lower than No. 13.

Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune believes that, as the draft approaches, talk of the trade going down ?will heat up again.?? Cummings writes that the Bucs continue to refuse to part ways with their 2013 first-round pick ?in part because it?s too soon to know how this year?s draft will play out.?

That?s a great point.? A player the Bucs would have drafted with a much higher pick could squirt through the first 12 selections, making them more inclined to use it.? Conversely, there may be no one Tampa really wants at No. 13, making a trade to the Jets more likely.

That would actually help the Jets, since getting the 13th pick after 12 have been made would ensure that no one would try to leap past New York and take the player the Jets would possibly be targeting at No. 13.

There?s a third path that could get the deal done, giving the Jets the 2013 first-round pick G.M. John Idzik feels compelled to obtain.? The Bucs could slide back from No. 13 if they aren?t thrilled with any of the players available at that point, and then offer the lower pick to the Jets.

The fact that the Bucs have yet to sign another cornerback, coupled with the belief in league circles that ownership in Tampa wants Revis, means that this deal isn?t dead, yet.? In the end, it could make for some unexpected twists on the night of Thursday, April 25.

Nigerian military: Soldiers raid home, 14 killed

KANO, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria's military says soldiers have attacked a home believed to harbor Islamic extremists, an assault that killed 14 people.

Capt. Ikedichi Iweha told journalists Sunday that soldiers attacked the home in the northern city of Kano after a car fled a military checkpoint. Iweha said soldiers found weapons and a car loaded with explosives inside the home, which was later demolished.

Iweha said soldiers killed 14 suspected extremists, while offering no details about soldiers being injured in the assault. The Associated Press could not immediately independently verify how many people died in the attack. Nigeria's military often downplays its own casualties and refers to all those killed as terrorists, though human rights groups and lawyers say soldiers routinely kill civilians in their campaign against extremists.

Five members of a Southern California family were killed in southern Nevada when their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two ? the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy ? were hospitalized in critical condition.

Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 15 near the Utah line. Soriano's sport utility vehicle struck the van from behind, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and roll near Mesquite, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, investigators said.

A 23-year-old passenger in Soriano's SUV was treated at the hospital and released.

Authorities believe Soriano was returning from a visit with family in Utah to his home in California at the time of the wreck, Hixson said. They didn't immediately release his hometown or the names or hometowns of the victims.

Beer bottles were found in the SUV, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won't be known for a couple of weeks, he said.

Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seatbelts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.

"Unfortunately, so many in the van weren't wearing seatbelts, and some might have survived had they been wearing them," Hixson said. "We see it so many times where people can survive simply by having a seatbelt on."

The van was carrying a couple, their children and some aunts and uncles, he said. Killed were three men in their 40s, a teenage female and an adult female.
