Nigeria: Christmas attacks death toll rises to 42 (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Gunmen killed two civilians in a northeast Nigeria town plagued by attacks from a radical Muslim sect, an official said Friday, as a hospital official said one more person died from Christmas attacks blamed on the sect, raising the toll to 42.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Hassan Ifijeh Mohammed told The Associated Press that the attack occurred after Friday afternoon prayers in a market near a mosque in the city of Maiduguri. Mohammed said the gunmen wounded a third person.

He said authorities believe the incident could either be a robbery attempt or another attack by a feared radical sect known as Boko Haram which has carried out a series of attacks and assassinations in the area.

Also on Friday, a hospital official said one more person died of injuries after a Christmas Day blast that struck St. Theresa Catholic Church near Nigeria's capital, bringing the death toll from Christmas attacks to 42.

The official, who asked not to be named because he is not permitted to speak to the press, said the victim died late Thursday after Sunday's blast outside the church.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency reported 37 deaths as of Thursday evening in the blast near Abuja.

Four more people were killed in other Christmas violence blamed on a radical Muslim sect that wants to impose Shariah law in Africa's most populous nation.

The Boko Haram sect claimed responsibility for the coordinated Christmas Day attacks launched across Africa's most populous nation.

Police: Texas Killer Planted Gun

(NewsCore) - Police say the gunman who shot dead six members of his family before turning the gun on himself in Grapevine, Texas, on Christmas Day may have planted a handgun in the hand of one of his victims, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Police documents released Wednesday showed that handguns were retrieved from the hands of both the gunman -- Azizolah Yazdanpanah -- and his 59-year-old brother-in-law Mohamad Hossein Zarei.

"We think Aziz [Yazdanpanah] tried to stage the scene by putting the gun in Mohamad's hand," Grapevine police Lt. Todd Dearing told the Morning News. "The man was shot four times by both guns. He didn't shoot himself like that. He was a victim in all of this."

Yazdanpanah, 56, was a real estate agent who had been dealing with money problems and the breakup of his marriage when he killed his family after they unwrapped their Christmas presents Sunday, according to myFOXdfw.com.

He was reportedly dressed as Santa Claus as he carried out the murder-suicide.

His 55-year-old estranged wife Fatemeh Rahmati, their 19-year-old daughter Nona Yazdanpanah and 14-year-old son Ali Yazdanpanah were among his victims. Rahmati's sister Zohreh Rahmati, 58, her husband Zarei and their 22-year-old daughter Sara Fatemeh Zarei were the other three killed.

The police documents released Wednesday also provided details of the 911 call that was received at 11:30am on Christmas Day.

"On the recording, we discovered that the caller, whom we believe to be Aziz, ... [said] 'I am shooting people,' after he said 'Help ... Help,'" Dearing said in a statement.

"The newly discovered audio was not heard on the original audio software over many playbacks, and was not heard/understood by the dispatcher who took the call on Sunday."

The Day After Raw for Dec. 26, 2011

One night after Christmas and seven months before the 1,000th edition of Raw (on July 23, 2012), Monday evening?s SuperShow was the gift that kept giving. Like a kid tightly toting the prized possessions left by good old Saint Nick, the Superstars, Divas and even top WWE executives showed off some newly snagged holiday presents.

It?s the day after Raw. In the spirit of the season, let?s see what you thought about the gifts that got GOT by the roster ?

Laurinaitis gets a new shirt
He may not be ?a forward thinker? (according to CM Punk), but John Laurinaitis sure is a hip dresser. The newest addition to the WWE EVP and Interim Raw GM?s wardrobe was one of the WWE Champion?s ?Best in the World? tees, making for a mirror image moment between a widely smiling ?Jolly? Ace and The Straight Edge Superstar the night after Christmas.

Feigned support or not, later in the evening, the WWE Universe came sooo close to seeing Laurinaitis throw it back to All Japan in a bout against Punk in the tattooed titleholder?s own hometown, the Windy City.

@HeatherRKOCena: Johnny Ace in CM PUnk Shirt #HELL _NAW #RAW

@Smalls0629: I think John Laurinaitis' CM Punk shirt is a bit too tight. #Raw @WWE

@aj0314: John Laurinaitis doing CM Punk's entrance in his shirt. You're not still hungover from Christmas, folks. #WWE #RAW

R-Truth attacks The MizTruth gets retribution
Jimmys beware! R-Truth has been set free!

The rhymin? renegade made his return to Raw after a beatdown from his once trusted associate, The Miz. After thrashing his newfound enemy, Truth spoke about holiday gifts and offered an altered verse from ?Auld Lang Syne? that ended with Miz, his ?old acquaintance? who?s going to ?get got!?

While dancing of the perimeter of incoherence, Truth?s core message was clear to The Awesome One, who better watch his back in 2012. Do you understand?

@WWEFunnyQuotes: "THAT'S the problem with Christmas! You open all your presents and it's OVER!" -@RonKillings #wwefunnyquotes #Raw

Dolph Ziggler celebrates his pin of CM PunkZiggler gets ? a new championship?
Was it a Christmas miracle or just a precursor of what?s ahead in 2012? With his golden mane puffed out perhaps more than his chest, Dolph Ziggler actually pinned CM Punk to earn No. 1 contendership and a title opportunity on the next edition of Raw ? the first WWE show of the new year ? in a joust that could very well become match of the year in 2012.

After the victory, Ziggler acted like Howard Finkel had just proclaimed him the "NEWWW WWE Champion." The showoff grabbed the WWE Championship for celebratory laps around the ring while The Second City Savior?s fellow Chicagoans voiced their displeasure ? which admittedly didn?t quite reach the anti-Cena levels from Money in the Bank this past summer (one of WWE.com?s Top 25 Matches of 2011).

Speaking of Punk?s hometown, is Chi-Town really the greatest WWE city as The Voice of the Voiceless claimed? Or is it really New York City? Boston? Take your pick of WWE Hot Beds and discuss.

@Skip2MyJays: lmao...Dolph Ziggler celebrates like he just won the #WWE Title. #HEEL #Raw

@EllisCroft: #RAW is in Chicago again tonight, reminds me of Money In The Bank. Match of the year. @CMPunk @WWE

@NikkiOrton16: dolph your hair... tho. #RAW

@WadeIsMyKing: I CAN'T WAIT FOR DOLPH TO BECOME WWE CHAMPION. :') #RAW

@JoeyStyles: Next Monday on the first Raw of 2012, @CMPunk defending the WWE Championship against @HeelZiggler could be the WWE Match of the Year. #Raw

@RealWH: Someone tell Dolph he hasn't won the title lol #Raw

@MarkinOut: If Dolph Ziggler's hair was green, he'd look like Doink the Clown. #WWE #Raw #CMHomecoming

Officials: Nations resolve to pressure Iran (AP)

ROME ? The U.S. and other nations meeting Tuesday in Rome to discuss sanctions against Iran for its alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons have resolved to boost pressure on Tehran to restart negotiations, Italian foreign ministry officials said.

The closed-door meeting brought together officials of what the ministry described as "like-minded countries." The group included the United States and EU nations, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and possibly a Gulf country, diplomats said. Exact participants were not identified.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unidentified U.S., European and Arab diplomats, reported that Iran's oil exports and global energy prices were key issues on the table.

Foreign ministry officials, speaking on traditional ground rules of anonymity, said participants stressed the urgent need for Iran to satisfy world concerns about its nuclear program.

The participants also expressed determination for a broad partnership to strengthen pressure on Tehran with the aim of restarting a serious negotiation process, the ministry officials said.

Iran denies that it is pursuing nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

More than 50 "Occupy" protesters arrested in New York (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? More than 50 anti-Wall Street protesters were arrested on Saturday after they tried to climb over a chain-link fence around a church parking lot in a bid to establish a new encampment.

The demonstrators had used a wooden ladder to scale a chain-link fence into the lot owned by Trinity Church, an Occupy Wall Street spokesman said.

Police had no immediate figure on how many people were taken into custody, but Gideon Oliver, president of the New York City chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, put the number at about 55, including between five and 10 members of the clergy.

The remaining demonstrators marched through Manhattan's streets toward the house of the Trinity Church rector, but were turned away by police.

Later, as they started to move toward Midtown, some of the demonstrators were hemmed in by lines of police, and police on motorcycles tried to disperse protesters who were in the middle of streets.

"We are unstoppable. Another world is possible," and "Whose street? Our street," were among the chants from the protesters, who blocked some streets as they marched.

The remainder of the group, several dozen protesters, held signs in Times Square into the evening.

Trinity Church's rector, James H. Cooper, issued a statement on the church's website saying: "We are saddened that OWS protesters chose to ignore yesterday's messages" from several Episcopal and Anglican church leaders, including South African Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu.

The messages discouraged trespassing on Trinity Church property and called attention to several ways in which the church was providing support to Occupy Wall Street and working for economic change.

Cooper said the vacant church lot the OWS wanted to move into "has no facilities to sustain a winter encampment. In good conscience and faith, we strongly believe" erecting a camp there "would be wrong, unsafe, unhealthy, and potentially injurious."

The Occupy movement began with protesters taking over a park in New York in September to draw attention to economic inequality and a financial system they say is unfairly skewed toward the wealthy.

In ensuing months the protests and encampments spread to cities throughout the United States as well as to some in other countries.

But Occupy camps in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and a number of other major cities were shut down in recent weeks in operations that resulted in hundreds of arrests and have raised questions about the movement's future.

Authorities have justified their moves against the camps on a variety of grounds, including that the camps were causing sanitation problems and were dangerous to public safety.

PFT: Harrison loses appeal on suspension

Broncos Vikings FootballAP

It took Broncos coach John Fox a while to warm up to the unique skills of Tim Tebow.? Even though Fox apparently has decided to ignore the niceties of the traditional quarterback position and to embrace the fact that Tebow is leading his team to victory after victory in 2011, Fox isn?t ready to anoint Tebow as the team?s quarterback for 2012.

?We get that question a lot, whether it?s John Elway or myself,? Fox told Jim Rome on Friday.? ?We?re both his biggest fans.? I mean, we love him.? How would you not at 7-1?? I think right now, all our focus is, let?s get this season done.

?We love him, he?s great, we?re pulling for him, and you know, we?ll make those decisions when this season is over and not worry about next season at this point.?

That?s fine, but what does the guy need to do to show that he?s the team?s quarterback of the future?? Plenty of quarterbacks with far lower winning percentages than Tebow have locked down the year-in, year-out starting jobs with their teams.

So why not Tebow?? As quarterbacks go, the Broncos could do a hell of a lot worse, and plenty of teams would surely pounce on the opportunity to make the until-further-notice starter a guy who has won games, elevated his team, generated unprecedented excitement among the fan base, and provided an anti-Hurd role model to the youth of America.

Maybe Fox is worried that it?s all a fluke.? Or maybe he?s concerned that Tebow won?t play as well without the added motivation of constantly having to prove himself.? Regardless, Tebow provides a solid foundation around which to build the team for the next decade.

If the Broncos won?t realize that, some other team will.

Poll: Republicans shrug at Romney's business past (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Mitt Romney says his business background makes him a better presidential candidate than Newt Gingrich, who has spent decades in Washington. But the argument is not moving Republicans his way, underscoring Romney's challenge in finding a way to stem Gingrich's rise three weeks before the Iowa caucus, a new Associated Press-GfK poll finds.

Republicans are evenly divided on whether a Washington insider or outsider is best-suited to be president. That's a problem for Romney, who cites his private-sector experience as the biggest difference between the two front-runners for the GOP nomination.

The poll also found a significant drop in satisfaction with the overall field of Republicans vying to challenge President Barack Obama next year. In October, 66 percent of Republican adults were satisfied with the field, and 29 percent unsatisfied. Now, 56 percent are satisfied and 40 percent unsatisfied.

Except for four years as Massachusetts governor, Romney, 64, has spent his career in business and management. He ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1994 and for president in 2008.

Gingrich, 68, spent 20 years in the U.S. House, including four as speaker. Since 1998, he has had a lucrative, Washington-based career as a consultant, speaker and author.

Both men have earned millions of dollars over the years.

The AP-GfK nationwide poll of Republicans found Gingrich with an edge over Romney as the candidate they'd like to see win the nomination. However, it falls just within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 6 percentage points.

Voter preferences in early voting states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina do not necessarily match those in national polls. The Iowa caucus is Jan. 3. The New Hampshire primary is one week later.

For months, Romney has hovered at or near the top of Republican polls, while various rivals have risen and fallen. Gingrich's rise is at least as dramatic as the recent plummets of businessman Herman Cain and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

An October AP-GfK poll of Republicans found Gingrich well behind the leading candidates, with 7 percent. Romney had 30 percent. The new poll finds Gingrich preferred by 33 percent of Republicans and Romney by 27 percent. All other candidates are in single digits.

Jonathan Luers, a software engineer from Chicago, is among those Republicans less than thrilled about the field.

"I guess I'm a little disappointed that it's been so fluid," said Luers, 52. "I was kind of hoping there would've been a more clear choice, without the quick knockdowns and everything." He said he's leaning toward Gingrich.

Romney has built his campaign largely on the argument that his business background makes him better suited for the presidency than anyone else, especially in terms of creating jobs. In a debate Saturday in Iowa, Romney struggled at first to name areas in which he and Gingrich disagree.

After citing Gingrich's support for a mining colony on the moon and changes to child labor laws, Romney said: "The real difference, I believe, is our backgrounds. I spent my life in the private sector. I understand how the economy works."

Among Republicans who say they prefer a non-Washington candidate, Romney has a modest edge over Gingrich. Gingrich has a larger advantage among those who say they prefer Washington experience in a nominee.

Among all people surveyed in the AP-GfK poll, including Democrats and independents, Romney fares better than Gingrich in head-to-head matchups with Obama. Obama and Romney are statistically even. But Obama leads Gingrich 51 percent to 42 percent.

That may give Romney some ammunition with Republicans whose top priority is ousting Obama. Otherwise, Republicans appear to see Romney and Gingrich as similar in many important ways. The two men polled about evenly on the questions of who would be a strong leader, has the right experience, understands ordinary people's problems and can bring needed change.

Romney holds a clear edge on who is most likable. Gingrich leads on the question of who "has firm policy positions." Romney is often asked about his changed positions on abortion, gay rights, gun control and immigration. Gingrich, however, also has shifted views on some key issues over the years.

The poll found sharp drops in popularity for Perry and Cain over the past two months. Cain has suspended his campaign.

Dmitry Kan, a Republican who owns an advertising firm in Acton, Mass., is not enthusiastic about the field.

"There is not much choice," he said. "It looks like it's going to be either Romney or Gingrich."

Kan, who is 24 and emigrated from the former Soviet Union in 1992, said he is leaning toward Gingrich but might change his mind. He said he respects Romney's business background, but "seeing how it works these days, I think Gingrich's ability of political prowess might work better."

Kan said Gingrich "did some difficult stuff back in the 1990s, back in the Clinton administration. Hopefully he will be able to somehow break through the gridlock."

Catherine Sebree, 41, a homemaker from The Woodlands, Texas, likes Romney.

"I appreciate the values that he stands for," she said. "I believe that he is the person that will put family first and will help to strengthen our nation and hopefully help out with the budget deficit."

Sebree embraces Romney's non-Washington background. "I think that the people that are experienced in Washington have screwed up enough that it's time to try some different methods," she said.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Dec. 8-12 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The poll included interviews with 460 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. The margin of error for these results is plus or minus 6 percentage points.

ESPN reporter Andrews sues man for peephole videos (Reuters)

NASHVILLE (Reuters) ? ESPN reporter Erin Andrews has filed a new $10 million invasion of privacy lawsuit over a 2008 incident in which she was videotaped in the nude through the peephole of her Nashville hotel room.

Andrews, one of the most popular reporters on the network, wants $6 million, plus costs and interest, from the West End Marriott, and $4 million from Michael Barrett, the Chicago man who pleaded guilty to stalking Andrews and was sentenced in 2010 to 2 1/2 years in federal prison.

According to Davidson County Circuit Court records, the suit was originally filed last year and was refiled to make sure the statute of limitations did not run out.

At Barrett's sentencing hearing, Andrews said that she still suffers fear, anxiety and public humiliation as a result of having been stalked.

"I'm being victimized every day...and I did nothing to deserve it," Andrews said, adding the videos will likely always be on the Internet.

Prosecutors said Barrett had traveled to at least three cities and taken videos of the sideline reporter through the peepholes of hotel rooms.

According to the lawsuit, Andrews said the hotel was guilty of negligence for, among other things, allowing Barrett to know that Andrews was staying in the hotel and then allowing him to book a room next to her own. Andrews was in Nashville to cover a Vanderbilt University football game.

She also said the hotel was negligent for failing to discover Barrett altered the peephole of the plaintiff's hotel room door, allowing the videos to be taken.

The suit said the videotaping and posting of the nude images continues to cause Andrews "great emotional distress and embarrassment."

The hotel chain declined comment on the lawsuit.

"Unfortunately we do not comment on pending litigation," said Jeff Flaherty, Marriott's director of public relations.

Andrews' Nashville attorney, Mary A. Parker, declined to comment on the case.

Marlins building a house of cards

Miami's big-spending ways looks nice now, but plan won't be sustainable

Image: PujolsGetty Images

If Albert Pujols joins Miami the Marlins will be contenders. But will success last?

MLB EXPERT MAILBAG

By Tony DeMarco

Tony DeMarco

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 12 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: The Miami Marlins all of a sudden are spending a bunch of money. Are they doing so wisely, and will they be a playoff contender next season?
? Frank Radcliffe, Miami

A: As a long-time critic of owner Jeffrey Loria's penurious ways, it would be a bit hypocritical of me to rip him for finally spending some money. But he's gone from one extreme to the other, and there's little chance of this being a fiscal success long-term.

Could the Marlins be a contender the next season or two? That's quite likely, although there still are so many roster uncertainties at this point ? even if they have Albert Pujols in their lineup.

But the Marlins never have had a payroll above $60 million, and operated at about $57 million in 2011, so we're talking about doubling that figure overnight if they can lure Pujols away from St. Louis. And if they believe that an attendance boost from a new stadium is going to pay for this for several years to come, they're delusional.

It's pretty well-established that the average attendance boost from new stadiums lasts two-three seasons. And that's in good markets ? but we're talking about a market with a 19-year-track record of being arguably the majors' worst.

The Marlins drew 3,064,847 in their inaugural 1993 season, fell to 1,937,467 the following year, and have drawn more than 2 million only one other time ? when they won it all in 1997. Their home attendance in their 2003 title season was only 1,303,214, and they have averaged under 20,000 in 11 of the last 13 seasons.

Yes, the football stadium they played in was awful. And the new retractable dome will take care of the constant-threat-of-rain issue. But the idea of adding a Latin influence with Ozzie Guillen and Reyes translating to more appeal? That hasn't worked in 19 years, so why expect it to now?

Look no further than the Twins for a similar experiment gone bad. Due in part to their move to Target Field, their payroll all but doubled from about $65 million in 2009 to about $113 million this season ? when they lost 99 games and fired their general manager.

Now to the individual Marlins signings. No doubt, Heath Bell is a nice upgrade from Juan Carlos Oviedo (the closer formerly known as Leo Nunez). But nobody should be surprised if, out of Petco Park, Bell doesn't match his numbers in three seasons as the Padres closer. His strikeout-to-walk ratio already took a dive last season, and he's 34, so it's not likely to climb. And it's not as if Oviedo/Nunez was terrible; he saved 66 games the last two seasons.

Reyes is a legit star in the prime of his career. But he also picked the right time to stay healthy and win a batting title. Given all the trouble he's had with his legs, it's hard to imagine him being the same player he was in 2011 come the last two years of his six-year, $106-million deal.

This Marlins' spending spree could work short-term, but it will become a financial house of cards when they're back to selling 20,000-25,000 tickets per game.

Q: Mike Matheny as manager of the Cardinals ? good fit or not?
? Tony Matheny (no relation), Montgomery, Ala.

A: Matheny was an intriguing choice, to say the least, and there's just no way of knowing at this point how he'll work out as the man who replaced Tony La Russa.

If you're a Cardinals fan, you just have to trust the judgment of general manager John Mozeliak (an excellent and underrated GM, in my opinion) and the rest of the front office.

Matheny has been in their system as special assistant in player development, and also played for the team. So they know his makeup, work ethic and character, and are convinced he can grow into the position, even though he's never managed at any level. Others outside the organization who know Matheny also speak highly of him.

Dave Duncan has stuck around for at least one more year, and that will make things much easier for Matheny when it comes to all pitching decisions.

I would have thought the Cardinals would go with a more-experienced bench coach to help Matheny with in-game management. Instead, they promoted assistant hitting instructor Mike Aldrete, bypassing long-time third-base coach Jose Oquendo, who some thought had a shot at replacing La Russa.

Q: What do you think would be the best move for the Braves if they decide to trade starting pitching to get another bat in their lineup?
? Stephen Shoemaker, Tulsa

A: The Braves already dealt Derek Lowe to the Indians for a prospect, so they need to be careful about stripping too much from their rotation in search of another hitter.

Remember, Tim Hudson will be coming off back surgery, and Tommy Hanson has battled shoulder problems. So even with a promising and talented group of young starters ? Brandon Beachy, Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado and Arodys Vizcaino ? you want to have them break in at the back of the rotation behind three quality, experienced starters.

There is plenty of interest in Jair Jurrjens ? and rightfully so ? as he is an excellent No. 2-type and only 25. One drawback is an ongoing right knee issue that could persist or worsen. But he was healthy enough to be penciled into the playoff rotation if the Braves had been able to advance that far, so his health for 2012 seems good.

The Reds are one team with young hitting to offer. But what would help the Braves as much as anybody they can acquire in the trade market is Jason Heyward looking like his 2010 self again ? and not his 2011 version.

The Braves also appear willing to trade versatile Martin Prado if they can get a power-hitting corner outfielder in return. That opens the possibility of a match with the Rockies for Seth Smith.

The Braves have other needs, as well. They're looking for a veteran stop-gag shortstop as insurance for rookie Tyler Pastornicky.

49ers, Santa Clara secure funding for new stadium (AP)

SANTA CLARA, Calif. ? The 49ers are a big step closer to moving from San Francisco to a new stadium about 45 miles south in Santa Clara.

The team and City of Santa Clara announced on Friday that they have secured long-awaited funding for the project. Goldman Sachs, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch and U.S. Bank have agreed to an $850 million loan with the city's stadium authority and the 49ers.

The money will cover the bulk of the estimated $1 billion project. Funding from the National Football League, a hotel tax and city redevelopment funds is expected to make up the difference.

Officials say the loans were the last major piece of the project. The goal is to open the new stadium in 2015.

S&P piles pressure on Franco-German EU budget plan (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The leaders of France and Germany agreed a master plan involving treaty change on Monday to impose budget discipline across the euro zone as a top rating agency piled on pressure for a rapid solution to the EU debt crisis.

Standard & Poor's said it had told 15 of the 17 euro zone countries, including Germany, France and four others with the top AAA credit rating, that it might downgrade them en masse within 90 days, depending on the outcome of a crucial EU summit on Friday.

President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel said their proposal included automatic penalties for governments that fail to keep their deficits under control, and an early launch of a permanent bailout fund for euro states in distress.

They said they wanted treaty change to be agreed in March and ratified after France wraps up presidential and legislative elections in June. "We need to go fast," Sarkozy said.

Italy, the biggest euro zone nation in trouble, offered a glimmer of hope that the bloc could halt a crisis that is threatening the survival of the common currency. Its borrowing costs tumbled after its new technocrat government announced an austerity program.

French Finance Minister Francois Baroin said S&P's move did not take into account Sarkozy and Merkel's announcement.

After about two hours of talks with Merkel in Paris, Sarkozy told a joint news conference: "What we want ... is to tell the world that in Europe the rule is that we pay back our debts, reduce our deficits, restore growth."

Merkel added: "This package shows that we are absolutely determined to keep the euro as a stable currency and as an important contributor to European stability."

Later, the two leaders themselves swiftly responded to S&P's action with a joint statement saying they were united in their determination, along with their European partners, to "take all measures to secure stability in the euro zone.

Confidence that European leaders will come up with a credible plan on Friday to lead the region out of its debt crisis lifted world stocks on Monday, with European shares hitting a five-week high.

Investors and policymakers hope a summit deal on closer euro zone integration, combined with strict deficit reduction moves by heavily indebted states, will induce the European Central Bank to act decisively to stop bond market turbulence spreading.

"This agreement probably will give the ECB the political cover for intervening more actively on a temporary basis," said Uri Dadush, senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment's International Economics Program in Washington

"The bad news is that this is all temporary. It is difficult to see how a deal like this hangs together without a quid pro quo in terms of some movement towards euro bonds or some form of long-term fiscal support for the countries in trouble."

LACK OF PROGRESS

S&P told the governments it would conclude its review "as soon as possible" after the summit.

"... systemic stresses in the eurozone have risen in recent weeks to the extent that they now put downward pressure on the credit standing of the eurozone as a whole," it said in a statement.

It highlighted "continuing disagreements among European policy makers on how to tackle the immediate market confidence crisis and, longer term, how to ensure greater economic, financial, and fiscal convergence among eurozone members."

It said ratings could be lowered by one notch for the six AAA-rated countries and up to two notches for the remaining nine placed under review. Cyprus was already on downgrade watch and Greece already has a 'junk' CC-rating.

S&P also threw into relief the difficulty that euro zone countries face in trying not to strangle growth with so much austerity, saying there was a 40 percent chance that the output of the euro zone as a whole would shrink next year.

Brian Dolan, chief strategist at Forex.Com in Bedminster, New Jersey, said S&P might be "signaling to the EU this is it, that they've got to get something done now."

"If they are trying to send a message, now is a good time."

Merkel and Sarkozy had already both wanted a system of more coercive discipline for euro zone governments that fail to keep down their budget deficits.

But they had been under unprecedented pressure to see eye to eye in a crisis that has split them on issues such as the role of the European Central Bank in lending to troubled states, and whether the bloc should issue jointly guaranteed euro bonds.

Sarkozy and Merkel said they would send off their plan on Wednesday, in time for Friday's summit, and made clear their determination to drive through an EU treaty change despite objections from some member states.

If countries such as euro outsider Britain blocked a treaty change for the 27 EU members, the euro zone would proceed with an agreement among its 17 states, they said.

Sarkozy said the economic policy mistakes that led to the euro zone crisis must never happen again, accepting that France and Germany, the euro zone's two biggest economies, bore the biggest responsibility for finding a solution.

"In this extremely worrying period and serious crisis, France believes that the alliance and understanding with Germany are of strategic importance," he said. "Risking a disagreement would be risking the euro zone exploding."

Several governments, notably Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands, oppose treaty change because it might not win public backing in a referendum.

The British government said the changes proposed by Sarkozy and Merkel did not mean a significant transfer of power to Brussels and would therefore not require a referendum in Britain, which does not use the single currency.

AUTOMATIC SANCTIONS

The revised treaty would permit automatic sanctions against states that breach an existing deficit limit of no more than 3 percent of total economic output, unless a "supermajority" of states voted against the penalty.

That would reverse the current system where a majority of states must vote to launch a disciplinary procedure.

It would also enshrine a budget-balancing rule in national constitutions across the euro zone, although they gave no detail of the proposed wording.

In deference to French concerns about sovereignty, they agreed the European Court of Justice could rule on whether euro zone states had implemented the fiscal rule properly in national law, but would not be able to reject national budgets.

Merkel appeared to have prevailed in her opposition to the issuing of bonds in theory guaranteed jointly by all euro zone countries, but in practice by the bloc's strongest member, Germany. "We reject the idea of euro bonds," she said.

Sarkozy rallied behind her, saying it would be absurd for France and Germany to cover the debts of countries over whose debt issuance they had no control.

In return, Merkel gave ground on the rules of a future permanent rescue fund for the euro zone, the European Stability Mechanism, which have been cited as a deterrent to investors.

Germany had insisted that explicit clauses be included in all bonds issued from mid-2013 stipulating that private bondholders may have to share the burden of future bailouts.

Instead, the rules will say the ESM will respect standard International Monetary Fund principles and procedures, and that the write-down taken by Greek bondholders is a unique case.

One of the most startling market moves was on Italian bonds as Prime Minister Mario Monti declared that his 30-billion-euro austerity plan had saved his nation from economic disaster.

"Without this package, we think that Italy would have collapsed, that Italy would go into a situation similar to that of Greece," Monti told a news conference.

Italy's technocrat cabinet approved the combination of tax rises, pension reforms and incentives to boost growth in a three-hour meeting on Sunday.

Markets reacted enthusiastically, with the yield on Italian two-year bonds plunging 85 basis points to 5.78 percent. This was far below yields of over 7 percent last month, a level at which Greece, Ireland and Portugal had to take international bailouts.

But unions immediately called a strike to protest against the "Save Italy" package, while Monti urged the ECB to play its part in the wider drive to restore investors' faith in euro countries' ability to repay their debts.

Ireland unveiled new spending cuts in a tough budget, accounting for nearly 60 percent of next year's 3.8 billion euro fiscal adjustment.

Monti said better budget enforcement, an increase in firepower for the existing EFSF bailout fund and involvement of the International Monetary Fund would persuade the ECB to move.

ECB policymakers have been reluctant to buy up debt from distressed euro states, as this would take the pressure off governments to get their finances in order. But ECB chief Mario Draghi has signaled that a euro zone "fiscal compact" could encourage the bank to act more decisively on the crisis.

Stock futures little changed a day after big gains (AP)

NEW YORK ? U.S. stock futures are little changed Thursday, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average had it biggest gain in more than two years.

The euphoria over Wednesday's move by major central banks to cut borrowing costs has worn off a bit. In Europe most stock markets are slightly lower. Investors are once again seeking signs that European leaders can find a solution to the debt crisis there.

On Wednesday, the central banks' move sent the Dow soaring 490 points, or 4.2 percent, the largest gain since March 2009 and the seventh-largest of all time. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed up 4.3 percent.

Less than two hours before U.S. markets open, Dow futures are up 11 to 12,045. Futures for the broader S&P 500 are down 1 to 1,245.

Who keeps Spider-Man flying? Meet the superfans (AP)

NEW YORK ? Christine Antosca is something of a hero to the folks behind "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."

The 28-year-old New Yorker and Starbucks barista really liked the musical when she first saw it in May. In fact, she adored it: She has now seen it 46 times ? and counting. "It draws me back every single week I see it," she says.

How many more times does Antosca plan to see the show? Her answer will put a smile on the faces of producers as they seek to earn back their $75 million investment. "My goal is to keep going as long as the play is still around," she says.

Superfans such as Antosca, who regularly tweets about the show and discusses ticket promotions on Facebook, have helped keep alive Broadway's most expensive show, which this week celebrates the one-year anniversary of its first preview. Who expected that endurance last winter?

Repeat customers and celebrity fans that spread the word ? a group that includes political commentator Glenn Beck and actress Poppy Montgomery (TV's "Unforgettable" and "Without a Trace") ? are one reason Spider-Man still flies at the Foxwoods Theatre.

"I'm a huge fan of boldness. I am a huge fan of people thinking outside of the box. I am a huge fan of stories of triumph and reaching in and finding more than you even think you have inside of you. This has all of those elements," says Beck, who estimates that he's seen the show about a dozen times, even though he's not a huge fan of its composers, U2's Bono and The Edge.

Though box-office numbers have softened somewhat over the past few months, the show is hitting the holiday season on a high, offering one of the few Broadway shows geared for the whole family. It set a new box-office record for the 1,930-seat theater by grossing $2,070,000 for the week ending Sunday.

Producers say it has been seen by more than 600,000 people over the past year, but Montgomery and her son may skew those numbers. At Sunday's matinee, where the first-year anniversary was celebrated with the on-stage presentation of a 7-foot cake in the shape of the Chrysler Building, the actress was again catching the show with 3 1/2-year-old son Jackson. They've seen "Spider-Man" 13 times.

"It's become a tradition," she says. "It's almost like the circus. There's so much to it. And the music is amazing and he loves music. Anything that I can do to encourage that ? even if it means sitting through a 3-hour show 13 times ? I will do."

Virtually every Broadway show has hard-core fans: The wonderfully campy roller-skating musical "Xanadu" birthed so-called "Fanadus," "Rent" was known for its "Rent-heads," "Wicked" has its girl groupies and even "Next to Normal" ? a musical about bipolar disorder ? had repeaters. What makes "Spider-Man" unusual is fans' loyalty despite the high level of turbulence behind the scenes.

One man has seen it at least 53 times and four women have attended 30 shows each, says Michael Cohl, one of the lead producers, who thinks there might be one patron who has seen it over 100 times.

"I love the superfans," he says. "I think they're incredible. They see things in the show that I don't even see. There's a certain enthusiasm for life that a lot of us lose and I see it in those people every time I run into them. It's an enthusiasm I wish I had all the time."

Ticket buyers have kept coming, even though cast-members were being injured. They ignored the six delays in opening night and the record-breaking preview period with high ticket prices. They continued even though there had been loud complaints about the muddled plot and theater critics trashed it.

The fans even kept entering the Foxwoods Theatre doors following a shake-up that led to the firing of Julie Taymor, the co-book writer and director, who has now sued her former employers over copyright issues. They lined up although the show quickly became a punch-line for late-night comics

Despite the bad press ? or because of it ? patrons have been curious. "I always wanted to see it," says Antosca, who relies on same-day discount tickets for her weekly fix. "Even when the bad reviews were coming out, I always knew I still wanted to check it out for myself."

Says Montgomery: "If you see it through the eyes of a child, the critics don't matter."

Cohl and co-lead producer Jeremiah J. Harris say that besides the superfans, data on the audiences for "Spider-Man" show that half of all attendees had never been to a Broadway show before and more than half were from outside New York.

The positive box-office news ? the show has consistently grossed more than the $1.2 million a week the producers have indicated they need to reach to stay viable ? has helped persuade Harris and Cohl to keep the show in New York, forgoing for now schemes to tour it or franchise it.

Harris says he and Cohl look to "The Lion King" and "Wicked" as benchmarks. "We're a very young show, developing an audience, and the encouraging thing that we see is that we are able to expand our audience base and we see people leave the theater overwhelmingly happy," he says.

One of those is Montgomery and her son, a cheerful boy in constant motion, who will calmly sit through every performance even though he finds it hard sitting through an art class. "He won't go back to `Lion King' and he won't go back to `Mary Poppins.' He likes them but he probably won't go back again," she says. "This is all he talks about. It was all he talked about during `Lion King' ? `When are we going to see Spider-Man?'"

Antosca, the superfan, knows the feeling, and producers have also noticed, rewarding her for her loyalty. On her 28th birthday in September, which she celebrated by ? what else? ? going to "Spider-Man," Antosca was surprised with a backstage party. She was ushered into a balloon-filled VIP room, given cake and got to meet Reeve Carney, who plays Peter Parker, and Jennifer Damiano, who played Mary Jane.

Beck, who in January raved that the show "is better than `Wicked!'" on his radio program, often returns to the Foxwoods Theatre because he thinks "Spider-Man" is a great place to bring out-of-town guests.

He says watching the earlier jerky version thrilled him, even though he conceded it was a mess. "I was enjoying watching them figure it out," he says. These days, with the show stable, Beck's ardor has cooled. But the last time he came, he brought his 7-year-old son as a birthday surprise, and left with a memory the show's creative team will adore.

"We sat there in the balcony in the cheapest seats. Spider-Man, at one point, jumps off the top of that balcony and right before he did ? not because he knew it was my son, or anyone else but because he's Spider-Man ? he looked at my son and saluted him and then jumped off the balcony," says Beck.

"On the way home, my son hugged me and he sat in my lap and he whispered in my ear, `Dad, this has been the greatest night of my life!' I wanted to say, `You're 7 ? you don't have a lot to judge.' But it was a father-son moment that I will have with me for the rest of my life."
